For some reason, all my practices this week have been jaw clenchers. Today’s was by the far the worst, not to mention that I’m on my moon today. I know, I know, I often speculate the whole concept of a ladies holiday. I think it can mentally bog me down too. For example, I was so distracted on how heavy I felt that everything else went out the door.
Matthew was all over me today. He made the obvious statement that I am lopsided, which is bad because it will develop one psoas muscle and create potential problems. Everyone is essentially lopsided in one way or another. I am dramatically stronger on my right side, thus why I jump back at a weird angle. I don’t typically like to talk about how my asana practice is going - mostly because there is no real reason. Today was interesting and rather humbling though. He had me do supta vajrasana crossing my right foot first into padmasana…damn that hurts! It also made me realize how retarded my practice is.
So, now I’m at work sitting in lotus with the right leg in first (I’m hoping this will help open my hip too)…of course, my right butt cheek just went numb.
Anyway, I’m not sure how many women actually follow the whole “ladies holiday” idea. Some women think it helps them to practice while they’re on their cycle and I wonder if sometimes it’s all about learning to not be attached (and take a break). I dunno.

Perhaps Matthew is all over you because he read your blog about how he talks too much
Now he will make you suffer! (say that last sentence in your best evil voice with the emphasis on SUFFER)
I always practice on my moon days - except the first day when generally I feel like a fat bloated pig ready to be slaughtered. Otherwise, I have no problems with it. I think it is preference although some women will swear there is a physiological or astrological reason. Really it is based on some outdated thinking - you know when women were confined to the “red hut” for a week out of every month because they were supposedly unclean…

Or maybe it’s just that Matthew likes pretty girls.
Red hut? Are you talking about Pizza Hut? Is it supposed to be bad to be locked up at Pizza Hut? There’re free soda refills available there, and the salad bar has chocolate pudding.

Hi Tiff
How lucky for you that MS is taking over Tim’s classes. I also hear that Tim’s Mt. Shasta retreat is great. Thanks for your comments and advice today.
What you say of reversing the lotus is interesting. C. had me do that ocassionally to losen me up, and specifically in Supta Vajrasana. She had me do it twice, with reversing the legs.
It brings to mind something I’m pondering. It is whether it would be OK to attempt Dwi Pada in reverse, with the right leg behind first, then the left. I think of this because my right leg is the one most comfortable in LBH poses. I tried it once in front of my teacher, and of course, I was corrected to the left first, then right method. Anyway, it’s something I think about and might try in my own practice.
Cheers,
Arturo

“a fat bloated pig ready to be slaughtered” huh?
Supposedly in traditional practices in India, it’s viewed as the time where women can take rest from household duties aka WORK. I have a teacher who said its her time when her kids do all the cleaning and the husband cooks for those however many days. Doesn’t sound like a bad deal to me…unfortunately, in our culture, the woman is not cut any slack b/c we’re out there working like men. We can thank the feminist movement for that!
Okay, I’m totally joking, I don’t have a problem working (most of the time), but I will make the statement, women and men are not equal.
As per MS liking “pretty girls,” I don’t think he discriminates at all. He was all over everyone. Hahah and being locked up at Pizza Hut doesn’t sound so bad, unfortunately, it can also come with A LOT of cramp-age.
Arturo - I think it’s okay to do poses with reverse crossing…I just never do b/c my left hip is dramatically more open than my right, but again, this might be because I always go in first with my left hip (that and my left side is more open than my right).

I don’t stop practicing on moon days. I do inversions and the whole deal. It just makes me feel better! But I also grew up with a mom who told me PMS is all in your head, and that it’s no big deal, get over your cramps, blah blah blah.
She’s hardcore. So if I ever try to rest and chill during that time, I can practically HEAR my mom raising an eyebrow at me! Amazing how that stuff stays with you.
